About Us
Aveland Court is a residential care home in Torquay for older people who need help with daily living. We support people living with dementia, people with physical disabilities, people with sight or hearing loss and people living with eating disorders, and we offer respite stays.
Food and eating get particular attention here, and not only because we cook on the premises. For somebody with an eating disorder, mealtimes can be the hardest part of a day, and for somebody with dementia or with poor sight they can be confusing or simply uninviting. So we think about how food is offered as much as what is offered, we are patient, we keep records of what people actually eat and drink rather than what was put in front of them, and we work with GPs and dietitians rather than in isolation.
Beyond that we try to keep life ordinary. People choose their own routines, keep their own things around them, and have company or quiet as they prefer. Help with washing, dressing and mobility is given at the person's own pace and recorded so it happens the same way whoever is on duty. Where there is sensory loss we attend to lighting, contrast and working hearing aids.
With dementia we rely on knowing a person well, so we gather their history with their family and keep adding to it. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated the home good overall.
