About Us
School House is a residential care home in Sunbury on Thames, Surrey, supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. Most of the people who live here are younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for people who need somewhere for a shorter period.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is outstanding. We are proud of that, and we take it as a description of a standard to hold rather than a reason to ease off.
What sits behind it is not complicated. We treat this as people's home, not as a placement. Residents decide how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, how a weekend is spent and who visits. Where somebody needs support to make a decision we give it in whatever form works for them, using words, pictures or simply showing the options, and we take the time rather than deciding for them because that would be faster.
Predictability matters here, so we hold to what has been agreed and give proper notice when something has to change. Staff are asked to know each person properly, because knowing someone's usual self is what lets you notice early that they are unwell or unsettled about something they find hard to put into words.
We also support a life beyond the front door, including work and college placements, activities locally and contact with family on the person's own terms.
