About Malvern House
Malvern House is a residential care home in Horley supporting older people and younger adults, including adults with learning disabilities and autism. We also offer planned respite stays. We are a home rather than an institution and we try to behave like one. People here have their own rooms, their own habits and their own opinions about how things should be done, and we would rather adjust around that than ask everybody to follow one pattern. Our staff help with personal care, medicines, meals, money and the ordinary running of the house, and they hold back where somebody can manage alone, because independence is easily worn away by well meant helpfulness. For adults with learning disabilities and autism, the specifics are what count. How a person communicates, what makes a place tolerable, how much notice they need before something changes, and which parts of the day they would rather handle themselves are all things we learn from them. When change cannot be avoided, we prepare for it properly. Life here is meant to extend beyond the front door too. We support people to keep up with family and friends and to get to the groups, activities, work or college that matter to them. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. If you are considering a place here, please come and see us and spend time with the people who already live here.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Malvern House. Report published 9 March 2019.
- 18 January 2019
Safe
Inspectors found people were safe. Staff understood how to protect people from abuse and harm and would report any incidents. Risks were assessed, medicines were well managed, the home was clean and there were enough staff to meet people's needs.
Effective
Inspectors found people's needs were assessed and recorded in individual plans. Staff had the training they needed, and people were helped to stay healthy and go to appointments. People were involved in making their own meals, and the legal requirements for consent to care were met.
Caring
Inspectors found staff kept a calm atmosphere in the home and understood people well. Staff were always patient with people and spoke to them in an appropriate way. People were supported to be as independent as possible.
Responsive
Inspectors found staff knew each person's personality and preferences and responded to people in an individual way. Each person had a plan for activities during the day. Complaints were responded to in a timely way, and people's wishes at the end of life were being explored in a sensitive way.
Well-led
Inspectors found a culture of person centred care. The registered manager was respected, and governance and reporting arrangements were clear. At the last inspection, Well-led needed improvement because staff supervisions were not recorded properly. At this inspection, supervisions were well organised and completed.
