About Us

At Locharwoods of Birkdale, we provide residential care for older people in a warm, homely setting in the heart of Southport. We are proud to be part of the local community here in Sefton, and we work hard every day to make sure the people who live with us feel genuinely at home.

We offer residential care, older person care, and respite care, so whether someone is joining us for a short stay to recover or recharge, or making Locharwoods their permanent home, we do our best to make the transition as smooth and comfortable as possible. We understand that moving into a care home is a significant step, both for the person coming to live with us and for their family, and we take that responsibility seriously.

Our team takes time to get to know each resident as an individual. We want to understand what matters to them, what their routines look like, what they enjoy, and how they like their days to feel. That knowledge shapes how we care for people, and we think it makes a real difference to everyday life here.

Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, and that reflects the effort our staff put in consistently. We do not take that rating for granted. It is something we work to maintain and build on, always looking at where we can do better.

We also believe in being open and approachable with families. We encourage people to visit, to ask questions, and to stay involved in the life of their loved one. Care works best when everyone is communicating well and pulling in the same direction.

If you would like to find out more about life at Locharwoods, we would be very happy to have a conversation or show you around.

More about the care at Valmar Care t/a Locharwoods of Birkdale

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Dressing, washing, tablets at the right time and someone to sit with make a short list that nonetheless fills a day. Locharwoods of Birkdale in Southport is registered to provide that care to older people, with meals and laundry part of the arrangement. Routines deserve a direct question, so ask when residents are helped up and settled at night, and whether anyone is pressed to follow the house timetable. Ask how many care staff are on duty after ten in the evening and how many of them stay awake. Inspectors gave the home a good rating, although the last published inspection was in September 2018, which is a long gap worth discussing. Fees in the North West commonly sit between £800 and £1050 a week.

Respite Care

A planned week away can keep a family carer going for months, and it also lets someone test a home at low stakes. Locharwoods of Birkdale is registered for respite, with a week or a fortnight the usual minimum and holiday periods taken up first. Bring clothes for the weather, toiletries, medication in its original box and a photograph or two for the room.

Residential Care

A residential home takes on the housekeeping rather than the nursing, so meals appear, washing is done and help is at hand with bathing and dressing. Locharwoods of Birkdale is registered on that basis, which means no nurse is required on the premises and health care comes from the GP and community services. Anyone needing daily clinical attention may be better placed in a nursing home, and it is reasonable to ask how the home manages a resident whose needs change. Activities, outings and the shape of an ordinary afternoon are not recorded on the register, so ask what is on offer and who arranges it. Sefton usually pays around £650 to £800 a week for a funded place, below the local private range, so ask whether a top up applies.
