About Us

Here at Abbotsbury, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Southport, Sefton. We are proud to have received a "Good" rating from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the genuine commitment of everyone who works here to supporting our residents well.

We care for a wide range of people, including older adults, those living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, and individuals with physical disabilities. We also welcome younger adults and offer respite care for those who need a short break from their usual arrangements, or whose families need some time to rest and recharge. Whatever brings someone to our door, we try to understand what matters to them as an individual and build their support around that.

Living with dementia can be a particularly challenging experience, both for the person themselves and for the people who love them. We take this seriously and work hard to create an environment where residents feel safe, familiar with their surroundings, and as settled as possible. The same care and thought goes into how we support everyone here, regardless of their needs.

We know that choosing a care home is not a decision anyone takes lightly. It often comes at a difficult and emotional time, and we want families and prospective residents to feel genuinely welcome when they come to see us. We encourage visits and are always happy to talk through any questions or concerns without any pressure.

Southport is a community we feel very much a part of, and many of our team members live locally. That sense of connection to the area matters to us. We are not a faceless organisation. We are a team of people who show up every day and genuinely care about the wellbeing of those who call Abbotsbury home.

More about the care at Abbotsbury

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

An inspection in September 2022 gave Abbotsbury a good overall rating. For older residents the day covers help with washing and dressing, medication, meals and company, and the home says it tries to understand what matters to each individual and build support around that. It describes a wide mix of residents, from older adults to people with mental health conditions and physical disabilities. That mix can suit some people and unsettle others, so a visit at a busy hour is worth arranging. Ask how many staff are awake overnight in this Southport home, how quickly a call bell is answered, and who records a resident's own routine.

Dementia

Living with dementia is challenging for the person and for those who love them, as this home puts it, and it says it works to make residents feel safe, familiar with their surroundings and as settled as possible. Those are the right aims. Dementia care rests on routines that do not shift, a layout that feels calm and secure, and staff who stay long enough to be recognised. The good rating from September 2022 gives some external support, though it is not recent. Ask what dementia training staff receive, how distress and walking are handled, and how care is adjusted as the condition advances.

Mental Health

Laburnum House registered Abbotsbury on 18 August 2021, and mental health is among the categories it may support. What usually helps there is stability, routine and being treated with dignity rather than managed. Ask who on the staff has mental health experience, what happens when someone is in crisis, and how the home works with community mental health services.

Physical Disability

The same care and thought goes into supporting everyone here regardless of their needs, according to the home's own account. For a physical disability the practical questions are accessible bathing, space to move, safe transfers and help that leaves a person their independence. Ask what equipment comes with a bedroom, how transfers are staffed, and whether an adapted bathroom can be seen on a visit.

Younger Adults

Seven categories appear on Abbotsbury's registration, younger adults among them, which is a broad span for one residential home. In practice most residents are likely to be considerably older than 65, so the question is what a week holds for somebody younger. Ask who else of a similar age lives there and how much say residents have over the day.

Respite Care

Respite is offered here for a short break from usual arrangements, or where a family needs time to rest and recharge. Short stays usually need booking well ahead and often carry a minimum length, so ask what applies at this Southport home. Pack medication and a note of routines, and treat the stay as a trial run for anything permanent.

Residential Care

North West weekly fees commonly run from £800 to £1050, while Sefton council pays about £650 to £800, and this home will set its own figure. Residential care provides help with everyday living rather than nursing, so personal care, medication, cooked meals and a day with some shape are included, but no registered nurse is on site. Someone whose health needs regular clinical attention would be looking at a nursing home instead. Abbotsbury says the same care and thought goes into supporting everyone there regardless of need. Ask what the fee covers, what is charged separately, and how any gap against the council rate would be met.

Questions families ask about Abbotsbury

Answered from the CQC register where we can. 5 of these the home has not told us yet, so ask when you call.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

Yes. Abbotsbury is registered for dementia care, so someone whose needs increase can usually stay rather than move. Ask how they support people in the later stages. Source: CQC register

Is there a nurse on site if health needs change?

No. Abbotsbury is a residential care home without on-site nursing. District nurses and GPs visit, but someone who needs daily nursing may have to move to a nursing home. Source: CQC register

Can they try a short stay before deciding?

Yes. Abbotsbury offers respite and short stays, which is a good way to see whether the home is the right fit. Source: CQC register

Will they support end of life care, so there is no move at the hardest time?

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.

Can she bring her cat or dog?

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Can a couple stay together?

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.

Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Do they take younger adults as well as older people?

Yes. Abbotsbury supports younger adults as well as older people. Source: CQC register

Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?

Ask the home. Every home should welcome a visit. Call to arrange one, ideally at a mealtime or during an activity, and ask about visiting hours for family.
