About Us

Here at Kirlena House, we provide residential care for people in the heart of Oxford, Oxfordshire. We support a wide range of individuals, including older adults, people living with dementia, those with physical disabilities, people with visual or hearing impairments, and younger adults who need a caring and supportive place to call home.

We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we do not take that responsibility lightly. From the moment someone walks through our doors, we want them to feel at ease, respected, and genuinely at home. Our team takes time to get to know each person as an individual, learning about their history, their preferences, and what matters most to them day to day.

For those living with dementia, we work hard to create an environment that feels familiar and reassuring. We pay close attention to routines, meaningful activity, and calm, consistent communication, because we know how much those details matter for wellbeing and dignity.

We are proud to have received a rating of Good from the Care Quality Commission, which reflects the commitment our whole team brings to the care we provide. That said, we are always looking at how we can do better and listen carefully to residents, families, and those who visit us.

Oxford is a wonderful city and we enjoy being part of its community. Whether residents wish to maintain connections with local life or simply enjoy the company and comfort within Kirlena House itself, we support them in living as full and meaningful a life as possible.

If you would like to find out more or come and have a look around, we would be very happy to hear from you. We believe the best way to understand what we offer is simply to come and meet us.

More about the care at Kirlena House

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Older people moving into a care home usually need a mix of practical help and quiet companionship: prompts or assistance with washing and dressing, support taking medication on time, help getting to meals, and someone to chat to during the long stretches of the afternoon. Kirlena House is registered with the CQC for older person care and holds a Good rating from its August 2019 inspection. Typical weekly fees across the South East sit between £1100 and £1450, while Oxfordshire County Council usually funds around £800 to £950 a week. Families considering the home should ask how mornings and evenings are structured, how many staff are on duty overnight, and how call bells are answered. It is also worth asking how the team learns each resident's preferences around bathing, sleep and favourite routines.

Dementia

Well delivered dementia care tends to rest on three things: familiar daily rhythms, staff who understand how the condition changes communication and mood, and a layout that feels calm, safe and easy to find your way around. Kirlena House is registered for dementia care and its About Us text describes paying close attention to routines, meaningful activity and consistent communication. Families should ask how the team responds when someone becomes distressed or frightened, what steps are taken if a resident tries to leave or wanders at night, and how care plans are adjusted as memory and mobility decline. It is also fair to ask about GP input, use of any sedating medication, and how relatives are kept informed. South East fees generally sit between £1100 and £1450 a week.

Physical Disability

People with a physical disability often need step free access, wet rooms, hoists, adjustable beds and unhurried personal care that supports as much independence as possible. Kirlena House is registered for this type of care, though its About Us text does not detail specific adaptations. Ask which bedrooms and bathrooms are fully accessible, what moving and handling equipment is available, and how the team balances safety with a resident's own goals.

Visual / Hearing Impairment

Sensory impairments call for practical touches: good even lighting, clear contrasting signage, hearing loops in shared rooms, and staff habits like facing the person when speaking and announcing themselves on entering a room. Kirlena House is registered to support people with visual or hearing impairment. Families should ask about lighting levels, signage around the building, whether a loop system is fitted, and how staff record each resident's communication preferences.

Younger Adults

Adults under 65 in a residential setting benefit from activities, routines and social contact pitched at their own stage of life, from work or study interests to music, sport and time out in the community. This matters because most other residents in a care home are considerably older. Kirlena House is registered to support younger adults, so it is worth asking how the home helps a younger resident find peers, keep hobbies going and maintain outside friendships.

Respite Care

Respite stays at Kirlena House, which is registered for this type of care, need booking well in advance, particularly around school holidays when family carers most need a break. Pack clothing, toiletries, current medication in its original packaging, and a list of GP and next of kin details. Minimum stays are often one or two weeks, and a respite booking can also work as a trial run before committing to a permanent move.

Residential Care

Residential care is about everyday living rather than clinical treatment, covering help with personal care, medication prompts, cooked meals, laundry, housekeeping and a programme of activities and company through the day. It differs from nursing care in that a registered nurse is not on site around the clock, so it suits people whose health needs can be met by trained care staff and visiting community nurses or GPs. Kirlena House in Oxford is registered for residential care, and its own description talks about getting to know each person's history and preferences. Weekly fees in the South East typically range from £1100 to £1450, with Oxfordshire's council rate closer to £800 to £950. Ask how meals are chosen, how activities are planned, and what happens if needs later grow to include nursing.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.

Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.

Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?

Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.
