About Us

Here at Birnbeck House in Weston Super Mare, North Somerset, we provide residential care for people with a range of needs, including learning disabilities, autism, physical disabilities and support for both younger adults and older people. We are a small, close knit community where the people we support are genuinely at the heart of everything we do.

We understand that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family can make, and we do not take that trust lightly. From the moment someone comes through our door, we aim to make them feel at home, not just cared for. We take time to get to know each person as an individual, understanding their history, their preferences and the things that matter most to them in daily life.

Our team works hard to create an environment that feels warm and familiar rather than clinical or institutional. We believe that good care looks different for every person, and so we work closely with individuals and their families to shape support that genuinely fits around their life rather than asking them to fit around ours.

For those living with a learning disability or autism, we are mindful of the importance of routine, clear communication and environments that feel safe and predictable. For older residents or those living with a physical disability, we focus equally on maintaining independence wherever possible and ensuring comfort and dignity at all times.

We are located in Weston Super Mare, which means our residents can benefit from a real community setting with access to the seafront, local shops and everything the town has to offer.

We welcome anyone who would like to visit, ask questions or simply have a chat about whether Birnbeck House could be the right fit for themselves or someone they love.

More about the care at Birnbeck House - Care Home Learning Disabilities

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Day to day support for older residents usually covers help with washing, dressing, continence, prompting or administering medication, and the quiet companionship that makes a house feel like a home. Meals, laundry and housekeeping are typically included, alongside help getting to appointments and keeping in touch with family. Birnbeck House is registered with the CQC to provide older person care in Weston Super Mare, though it has not yet been inspected and so carries no rating. Indicative fees across the South West sit around £1000 to £1300 a week, while North Somerset Council typically funds placements at roughly £750 to £900. Families should ask how morning and evening routines are planned around the individual, how many staff are awake overnight, and how medication is reviewed with the GP.

Learning Disability / Autism

Good support for adults with a learning disability or autism is built around the person, with predictable routines, clear communication and attention to sensory preferences. Birnbeck House is registered for learning disability and autism care, and its About Us text mentions the importance of routine for this group. Placements are usually commissioned by the local authority or NHS with an annual review and a person centred plan. Ask how goals, independence skills and any restrictions are recorded and revisited.

Physical Disability

Living well with a physical disability depends on accessible bedrooms and bathrooms, suitable hoists or mobility aids, unhurried personal care and support that encourages people to do what they can for themselves. Birnbeck House is registered to support adults with physical disabilities, but as the profile is unclaimed the specific layout and equipment are not published here. Worth checking in person are step free access, doorway widths, wet room facilities, and whether any specialist seating or transfer equipment can be accommodated.

Younger Adults

Adults in their twenties, thirties, forties and fifties often want a lifestyle that reflects their age, with their own music, interests, friendships and a say in how the week is shaped. That matters in a home registered for all ages, because peers and pace can otherwise skew much older. Birnbeck House is registered to support younger adults, so ask how many current residents are under 65 and what social opportunities exist beyond the house.

Respite Care

Respite at Birnbeck House offers a short planned stay, useful when a family carer needs a break or someone is recovering after hospital. Availability should be booked well ahead, as rooms are limited and minimum stays of one or two weeks are common. Pack medication in its original packaging, clothing, toiletries and a few familiar items. A respite stay can also work as a gentle trial before committing to a permanent move.

Residential Care

Residential care covers everyday living support for people who do not need round the clock nursing from a registered nurse. That usually means help with personal care, cooked meals, laundry, social activities and prompting with medication, in a setting that feels more like a home than a hospital ward. Nursing care, by contrast, is for people whose health needs require clinical oversight day and night, and is generally more expensive. Birnbeck House is registered for residential care rather than nursing, which fits people whose needs are primarily social and personal rather than medical. Regional fees typically fall between £1000 and £1300 a week, with North Somerset Council usually paying £750 to £900 for funded placements. Ask what a normal day looks like and how health changes would be handled if needs increased.
