About St. Michaels
We are St Michaels, a small residential care home in Dover, Kent. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, and we also offer respite stays. Being small is deliberate. It means the people who live here are not dealing with a constant stream of unfamiliar staff, that routines can be genuinely individual rather than set by a large rota, and that we tend to know without being told when somebody is having a hard day. We begin with what each person wants their week to look like and work back to the support that makes it possible. That might take in college or work, a regular swim, cooking their own meals, seeing family, or getting out into Dover and along the coast. Where somebody finds noise or change difficult, we keep to a predictable rhythm and prepare properly for anything out of the ordinary. This is their home, so choices about food, decoration and how time is spent belong to the people living in it. We also take positive risk seriously, talking decisions through with the person and those who know them well rather than quietly being cautious on their behalf. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We are used to detailed questions from families and commissioners and we welcome them.
