The Glen

The Glen is a residential care home in Dover, Kent (CT17 9SN). It holds a CQC rating of Outstanding.

About The Glen

The Glen is a residential care home in Dover supporting adults with a learning disability and autistic adults. We are a home rather than a facility, and the people living here are supported to run their own lives as far as they are able. Ordinary life is the point of the place. That means cooking, shopping, keeping your own room exactly as you want it, getting out to college, work or a club, and having a genuine say in how the week is arranged. For autistic residents we pay close attention to the things that make a home manageable: steady routines, proper warning before anything changes, and a quiet space to retreat to when the day has been a lot. Support is offered at whatever level suits each person. We are as interested in what somebody can do independently as in what they need a hand with, and we step back wherever help is not genuinely wanted. Respite stays are available, which can give a family a break or serve as a trial for somebody considering a move. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Outstanding. We are proud of it, and clear that it has to be earned again every week. Please get in touch if you would like to visit.

Safe

CQC rated this area Good. Inspectors found that managers made sure there were enough staff around when people needed them. Staff continued to be recruited safely. Risk was managed without stopping people from doing activities they enjoyed.

Effective

Staff also attended training that tried to copy how it feels to live with autism, and staff said this helped them to understand and support people.

Caring

CQC rated this area Outstanding. Inspectors found that staff were committed to supporting people to live fulfilled lives. People smiled and laughed with staff, and staff responded to people with kindness and respect. Staff supported people to build skills such as cooking, cleaning and budgeting, and some people had moved on to live more independently.

Responsive

CQC rated this area Good. Inspectors found that each person helped to develop a support plan covering their dreams and aspirations. People's needs were constantly assessed and support was adjusted when needs changed. A tablet computer helped people to choose meals and activities, and one person's interest in horses led to horse riding lessons.

Well-led

CQC rated this area Outstanding. Inspectors described the leadership as strong, with managers who had a 'can do' attitude about helping people to achieve despite complex needs. Staff attended forums on best practice and shared key information with the rest of the team. The Glen was featured in a recognised national best practice guide for adult social care providers.
