About Footprints

We are a residential care home in Canterbury, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism, including people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Most of the people who live here are younger adults. We also offer respite stays where a short break is what is needed rather than a permanent move. Where somebody has a learning disability alongside a physical disability or sensory loss, the ordinary business of a day takes more thought. How a room is laid out. How much time is allowed. How we approach a person and announce ourselves rather than appearing at a shoulder. How equipment is used so that being helped to move does not feel like being handled. We expect our staff to get these things right as a matter of habit. Beyond the practical, our job is to run a house where people live their own lives with support rather than a place that organises their lives for them. That means noticing how each person communicates, being careful about change, and giving notice and explanation before anything shifts. Where somebody can do something for themselves, even slowly, we would far rather they did. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We work closely with families and with the professionals involved, because families usually understand a person better than any assessment does. If you are considering a placement or a short break here, please get in touch.
