About Westholme
Westholme is a residential care home in Stanley, County Durham, supporting adults with a learning disability or autism. We offer permanent places and respite stays. We run the house the way a home runs rather than the way a service does. The people living here decide the ordinary things, from what is for tea to how the day is spent and who comes to visit. Staff are here to make those choices possible, not to take them over. Where somebody wants to do more for themselves, we back it at their pace. That might be cooking, shopping, managing money, travelling independently or keeping up a job, a course or a placement. Some people want to push at that steadily. Others want life to be settled and predictable, and that is an equally good aim as far as we are concerned. Communication gets careful attention here, because understanding a person properly is what allows them to direct their own life rather than have it arranged around them. Stanley and the wider area are on the doorstep and people here use them, keeping up the interests, friendships and routines they had before they moved in. We work closely with families and the professionals involved. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. If you are looking for a place or a respite stay in County Durham, please contact us and come and see the house.
