About Copper Beeches Lodge

We at Copper Beeches Lodge are proud to offer residential care in the welcoming Cornish town of St. Austell, providing a warm and supportive home for adults with a wide range of care needs. Set within the beautiful PL postcode area of Cornwall, our home blends the comforts of everyday living with the dedicated, person centred support that residents and their families rightly expect. Our setting in St. Austell allows residents to enjoy the gentle pace of life that the South West is known for, with the familiar surroundings of Cornwall providing a reassuring backdrop to daily routines. We aim to create an atmosphere that feels homely rather than clinical, where residents can settle in comfortably, welcome visiting family and friends, and continue to enjoy the small pleasures that make a house feel like home. The care we provide is broad in scope, reflecting our commitment to supporting individuals with differing needs under one roof. We offer residential care for those who need help with daily living, alongside specialist dementia care for residents living with memory loss or cognitive change. Our team also supports adults with learning disabilities and autism, those with physical disabilities, and individuals with visual or hearing impairments, ensuring that communication, mobility, and sensory needs are thoughtfully considered in every aspect of their day. We also welcome younger adults, recognising that care needs are not defined by age alone, and we provide support for individuals living with eating disorders, an area that calls for particular sensitivity, patience, and a calm, understanding approach. For families, this breadth of specialism means that a loved one entering our care will be supported by a team accustomed to thinking holistically, looking at the whole person rather than focusing on a single diagnosis or label. We work closely with relatives to build a picture of who each resident truly is, including their preferences, history, and the routines that bring them comfort. In practice, this means tailored care plans, attention to dignity and independence, and an environment where residents are encouraged to take part in activities that suit their interests and abilities. Whether that involves quiet companionship, support with daily tasks, or more structured assistance for complex needs, our approach is rooted in respect and genuine warmth. We feel it is important to be open about our most recent regulatory position. At our latest CQC inspection in October 2022, Copper Beeches Lodge received an overall rating of Requires Improvement, with the same rating across each of the five key domains of Safe, Effective, Caring, Responsive, and Well led. We understand that families researching care homes look closely at these ratings, and rightly so. A Requires Improvement rating indicates that the regulator identified areas where standards needed to be strengthened at the time of inspection. We take such feedback seriously, viewing it as a clear framework for continued reflection, learning, and practical improvement in how we support our residents day to day. We welcome conversations with families about our care, our progress, and how we work to provide the best possible experience for every resident. Choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a family can make, and we believe it should never be made on paperwork alone. If you are considering residential or specialist care in St. Austell or the wider Cornwall area, we warmly invite you to get in touch with Copper Beeches Lodge to ask questions, share what matters most to your loved one, and arrange a visit so you can experience our home for yourself.

What the inspectors found

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Copper Beeches Lodge. Report published 26 October 2022.

  • Inspectors visited on 15 September 2022 as part of a routine inspection.
  • 13 places, 13 people were using the service at the time
  • First assessment of the service

Safe

Inspectors found there were not consistently enough staff to provide individualised care. Not all staff had received training to protect people from abuse. Risk assessments were sometimes basic and lacked individual detail. The environment was safe, clean and well maintained, and restrictive practices were only used if there was no alternative.

Effective

Staff had received training but did not have a good understanding of best practice models of care. This meant people did not always receive support that followed best practice and focused on their quality of life.

Caring

Inspectors found people received kind care from staff who responded to requests for support. Staff knew and understood people well. The model of care did not always maximise people's choice, control and independence, and there was a risk averse culture in the service.

Responsive

People's care plans did not always include information to promote their wellbeing and enjoyment of life. Not everyone had been consulted about their aspirations or goals, and activities were not always tailored to the individual. People and those important to them, including advocates, were involved in reviewing care plans.

Well-led

Inspectors found the manager and provider had not ensured best practice was embedded in the service. Checks and audits were carried out but often did not look at the things that would help improve people's quality of life. CQC identified breaches in relation to person-centred care and governance.

Since the last inspection

This is the earliest inspection report we hold for this service, so there is no earlier rating to compare with.
