About Caprera

We are a residential care home in St Austell, providing a home for older people and younger adults who need support with daily living, including people living with dementia and people with mental health conditions. Our aim is a house that feels settled. Residents keep their own rooms, their own belongings and as much of their own routine as we can manage, and they decide how much they want to join in with whatever is happening. Meals are cooked here and we listen when somebody would rather have something else. Much of the work that matters is quiet: helping a person wash without hurrying them, sitting with someone who is anxious, noticing that a resident who usually talks has gone quiet. Dementia care, in our experience, rests on knowing the person rather than following a procedure. We ask families to tell us about working life, children, music, faith and old habits, because that knowledge is what allows staff to reassure somebody who is frightened or cannot place where they are. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places, which can give a relative who provides care at home a proper break. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall. Families are welcome whenever they wish to visit, and we would far rather hear a concern early than late. Do come and look round before deciding anything.
