About The Dunes

The Dunes is a residential care home in Poole. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic adults, people with physical disabilities, and older people, and much of our work is with younger adults who will be with us for many years rather than a short while. That long view changes how we work. We are not simply looking after people, we are part of their household, so the house is run with the people who live in it. They choose how their rooms look, what goes on the shopping list, what is cooked, and how the week is shaped. Where someone needs help with personal care, mobility or medication, it is given in the way they have asked for, and written down so that everyone does it the same. Communication is central. Some of the people here do not use speech, or use it only sometimes, and learning how each person makes themselves understood is a proper part of the job. We record what we learn so that a new member of staff does not start from nothing, and we involve families and advocates as much as the person wants. We encourage people to have a life beyond the front door, with work, college, clubs, friends and family, and we see our part as making that possible rather than filling the day ourselves. We also offer respite stays. Our most recent inspection by the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall.
