About Us
We are SS Philip & James Retirement Home, a residential care home in Bristol supporting older people from across Bath and North East Somerset. Our work is straightforward. We look after people who can no longer manage comfortably on their own, and we try to do it in a way that leaves each person recognisably themselves.
Residential care here means practical help with washing, dressing, medication and moving about safely, offered as discreetly or as closely as someone wants it. We also support residents living with dementia, and our approach rests on knowing the person rather than the diagnosis. When someone becomes unsettled, the explanation usually lies in their history, their routine or a preference we have not yet understood, so we take time to learn all three from the resident and from the family who know them best.
Respite stays matter to us. Relatives caring for someone at home need proper rest, and a planned break should feel like a real stay rather than a holding arrangement. Guests joining us for a short period share in daily life exactly as permanent residents do.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We treat that as a starting point rather than a finish, and we keep asking residents and their families what could be better, then acting on what they tell us.
Anyone thinking about a move is welcome to visit, stay for a meal and see how an ordinary day here actually runs before deciding anything.
