About Us

We are Richmond House, a nursing home in Leigh, in the borough of Wigan. We care for older people who need nursing support, for adults living with dementia, and for younger adults whose health needs call for qualified nursing on hand.

Having registered nurses here at all times changes what we can offer. It means we can take on conditions that need clinical monitoring, manage medication and wounds properly, work alongside GPs and community teams, and support people through periods of illness without an avoidable move to hospital. It also means a resident whose health declines can usually stay with us, among people they know.

Dementia care is a large part of our daily life, and we approach it by learning the person rather than the diagnosis: what work they did, what music they like, which parts of the day they find hardest. Families tell us the small things matter most, and we agree.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good. We treat that as a floor rather than a finish, and we audit our own practice between inspections so that problems are found by us first.

Relatives are welcome here without an appointment, and we would rather hear a concern early than have someone sit on it. If you are looking at nursing care in the Leigh area, come and visit, talk to residents and their families, and judge us on what you see.

More about the care at Richmond House

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

A good rating from an inspection on 2 August 2019 stands on the record, and 33 of the 60 homes nearby have published newer reports since. The present registration dates from 1 September 2026, so that judgement may belong to an earlier provider and should not be credited to this one. Richmond House is registered for older person care with nursing, which puts help with washing, dressing, meals and medication alongside clinical monitoring. It says registered nurses are present at all times, which lets a resident whose health declines usually stay among people they know. Ask how many nurses and carers cover the night across 49 places. Ask what the 2019 report found and what has changed since.

Dementia

The Royal Albert Edward Infirmary at Wigan is 5.5 miles off in a straight line. What work somebody did, what music they like and which parts of the day they find hardest are the details it says it gathers. Families tell it the small things matter most, and it agrees. Ask how that information is recorded and passed between shifts. Ask how distress is handled, whether any area is secured, and what happens as dementia advances.
