About Us
Here at St Mary's Nursing Home on Margaret Street in Stone, Staffordshire, we provide nursing care for older people in a setting that genuinely feels like home. Whether someone is joining us for a longer term placement or a shorter respite stay, we aim to make every person feel comfortable, respected and well looked after from the moment they arrive.
We specialise in older person care, nursing care and respite care, which means our team is experienced in supporting people with a wide range of needs. Our nurses and care staff work closely together to ensure that each resident receives the right level of support, and that their health and wellbeing are always at the centre of everything we do. We take the time to get to know the people in our care, their preferences, their routines and the things that matter most to them, because good care is about the whole person, not just their medical needs.
Families often tell us how much it means to them that their loved one is somewhere safe and familiar, where the staff know them by name and take a genuine interest in their daily life. We welcome families to be involved as much as they wish, and we try to keep communication open and honest at all times.
Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are proud of, though we see it as encouragement to keep improving rather than a reason to stand still. We are always looking at how we can do things better for the people who live here.
If you are considering care for yourself or someone close to you, we would warmly encourage you to come and visit us in Stone and see the home for yourself. We are always happy to have a conversation and answer any questions you might have.

More about the care at St Mary's Nursing Home Margaret Street Stone
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Clinical competence and kindness are separate qualities, and a family looking round needs evidence of both. The ordinary work still fills the day: help with washing and dressing at a tolerable pace, medication given accurately, meals people want, and company in the afternoon. St Mary's Nursing Home in Stone is registered for older person care, with weekly fees across the West Midlands commonly between £1100 and £1400 while Staffordshire pays about £820 to £1000 for placements it funds. A top up usually bridges that difference, so ask who would be expected to pay it. Ask how much choice residents have over bedtimes and baths, and how many staff are awake overnight.
Respite Care
Respite with nursing is harder to find than respite without it, so start looking well before the dates matter. Expect a minimum of one or two weeks, and send labelled clothing, an accurate medication list and a few familiar objects. A short stay at St Mary's Nursing Home can also work as a trial, which is a more honest test than a tour.
Nursing Care
A district nurse calling twice a week cannot do what a nurse based on site can, which is the whole reason nursing homes exist. The people who need that have dressings requiring regular attention, feeding tubes, unstable conditions, or medication too complex to manage otherwise. St Mary's Nursing Home is registered for nursing care, and the Care Quality Commission rated it good overall at its inspection in January 2022. Where the NHS accepts that nursing input is needed, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes roughly £235 a week towards the nursing element, lowering what the family pays. Ask who applies for that assessment and how often it is reviewed. Ask also what happens if somebody deteriorates in the night.
