About Us
Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home in Burton On Trent provides both nursing and residential care for older people. We support residents living with dementia and we offer respite stays for people who need care for a shorter period, including following a stay in hospital.
Having qualified nurses on site means that when a resident's health changes we can usually manage it here rather than moving them somewhere unfamiliar. Medication, wound care, nutrition and general health are looked after alongside the ordinary business of daily life, and we work with visiting doctors and other professionals so that decisions are made promptly.
Around that, we try to run a home rather than a ward. Residents keep their own routines and belongings, wake and eat at times that suit them as far as we can arrange it, and choose how much they want to join in with what is going on. Staff get to know people well enough to notice when someone is not quite themselves, which is often the earliest and most useful sign there is. For residents living with dementia, that familiarity and an unhurried pace are a real part of the care rather than an extra.
Relatives are welcome here without ceremony and we keep families informed when something changes.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We hold that standard in the everyday details, and anyone considering the home for a relative is welcome to come and look properly.

More about the care at Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Older residents at Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home can expect help with the ordinary tasks that become harder with age, from washing and dressing to prompts with medication and simple companionship through the day. The home is registered with the CQC for older person care and was rated good at its June 2024 inspection. Weekly fees across the West Midlands typically fall between £1,100 and £1,400, while Staffordshire County Council usually contributes around £820 to £1,000 a week for those it funds. Families thinking of a move should ask how morning and evening routines are handled, whether residents can wake and eat when it suits them, how many staff are on duty overnight, and how medication rounds and call bells are managed after dark.
Dementia
Well delivered dementia care usually rests on three things: familiar daily rhythms, staff who know each resident well enough to spot subtle changes, and a layout that feels calm and safe to move around in. Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home is registered with the CQC for dementia care alongside its nursing provision. Families considering it should ask how the home responds when a resident becomes distressed or anxious, what happens if someone walks with purpose and tries to leave, and how care is adjusted as dementia progresses into later stages. It is also worth asking how life story information is gathered and used, how relatives are kept informed of changes, and whether the home can continue to meet needs if behaviour or health become more complex over time.
Respite Care
Short breaks at Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home in Burton On Trent are worth booking several weeks ahead, as rooms for respite are often limited and holiday periods fill quickly. Minimum stays are commonly one or two weeks, and it helps to pack familiar clothes, toiletries, medication in its original packaging and a summary of care needs. Many families use a respite stay as a trial run before deciding on a permanent move.
Nursing Care
Having a registered nurse on the premises around the clock is what separates a nursing home from residential care, and Poplars Nursing and Residential Care Home is registered with the CQC to provide nursing for older adults. It suits people with ongoing clinical needs such as complex medication regimes, wound care, catheters, diabetes that is hard to stabilise, or conditions like Parkinson's and stroke that need close monitoring. Where a resident qualifies, NHS Funded Nursing Care contributes roughly £235 a week towards the nursing element of the fee, paid directly to the home and deducted from what the family pays. Regional fees generally sit between £1,100 and £1,400 a week, with Staffordshire's usual funded rate lower at £820 to £1,000. It is worth asking how nursing assessments are reviewed and how the home works with GPs and district teams.
