About Us
St Joseph's provides nursing care in Newcastle upon Tyne for older people, and we also offer planned respite stays.
Qualified nurses are here throughout the day and night, which means conditions can be managed steadily as they change, medicines are properly reviewed, and people who would otherwise face repeated hospital admissions can usually be looked after here by staff who already know them well. For people approaching the end of their lives, it means comfort, dignity and family around them rather than an ambulance and an unfamiliar ward.
Good nursing on its own is not enough, though, and we try never to let clinical care crowd out ordinary life. Residents decide when to get up, what to wear, where to sit and who to spend time with. Meals are something to look forward to rather than an item on a chart. Relatives come and go as they please, and we would far rather somebody dropped in unannounced than felt they needed an appointment to see a member of their own family.
Respite stays suit people coming out of hospital who are not quite ready to manage at home, and families who provide care themselves and need a period of rest.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We ask residents and relatives regularly what they think of us, and we act on it.
