About Learning Disability Service

Tameside Learning Disability supports adults with a learning disability and autistic adults in their own homes in Dukinfield and across Tameside. Our purpose is to help people live the life they choose, in their own place, with the amount of support they actually need. For some of the people we support that means practical help with cooking, shopping, laundry, bills and appointments. For others it means support to get out and about, to use local buses, to keep a job or a college course going, to join a club or to see family and friends. For many it is a mixture, and it changes as somebody gains confidence. We also support older people, including with personal care, medication and the practical running of a home, and much of our work is with younger adults, which means fitting around study, work and social life rather than around our rota. We start by getting to know a person properly, including how they communicate, what they enjoy, what they find difficult and what a bad day looks like for them. Plans are made with the person, and with the people who matter to them where that is wanted. Our staff are trained for the individuals they support, and we keep teams as consistent as we can because trust is built over months rather than in a single visit.
