This is a rural area, and we know that getting older or living with a disability here can mean long distances and few buses, so our work is aimed at keeping people part of their own community. For older people we help with washing and dressing, prompting and support with medication, meals and drinks, laundry, shopping and keeping the house comfortable, and we help people get out, whether that is to an appointment, to the shops or just for some air. We make time for the conversation that goes with it, because company is often the part that matters most. For people living with dementia we keep the same care workers visiting wherever we can, follow the routine the household already has and leave things where they belong. For people with a physical disability we help with moving safely and managing at home, and where somebody has sight or hearing loss we adapt how we communicate and always say who we are.
