About and District Mencap

We are Scarborough and District Mencap, supporting people in their own homes across Scarborough and the surrounding part of North Yorkshire. Much of our work is with adults who have a learning disability and with autistic adults, alongside younger adults and older people who need practical help to carry on with everyday life. Our starting point is always the individual. We take time to understand how somebody communicates, what a good day looks like for them, what they find difficult and what they are working towards, and we shape support around that rather than around a standard package. For some people that means help with personal care, medication, meals or managing a household. For others it is mostly about making work, college, friendships and getting out into the community achievable, with support that steps back as confidence grows. We want to be straightforward about where we stand. Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as requires improvement overall, and we are not going to talk around that. We know which areas were identified, we are working through them, and we would far rather discuss that openly with people and their families than avoid the subject while somebody is making an important decision. We keep the team around each person as consistent as we can, because familiarity matters enormously in this work.
