What we try to do in the first weeks is take the pressure off without taking over. We pick up the parts that have genuinely become hard and leave alone what somebody still handles well, because ability removed for the sake of speed is very difficult to win back. The work covers help with washing and dressing, medication prompted or given, meals, moving safely about the house, laundry, shopping, appointments and unhurried company. Some households want one visit a week and others need several calls a day. For people living with dementia we keep familiar carers coming at familiar times as far as any rota allows, and we follow the routines already in place rather than substituting neater ones of our own. Where a physical disability affects how somebody gets about, we work around the person and their home rather than expecting them to adapt to us. We have not yet received an overall rating from the Care Quality Commission. We are happy to talk openly about our training, our staffing and how we respond when we get something wrong.
