Before anything is written down we want to understand how the household actually works, what the person can still do and wants to keep doing, where the real difficulties lie and who else is already helping. Only then do we suggest what support might look like, and we would rather propose less and build up than arrive with a package that takes over. Day to day that means help with washing and dressing, with medication, with meals, with shopping and housework, with getting to appointments and with the ordinary company that stops a week feeling very long. For people living with dementia, keeping the same carers visiting is one of the most useful things we can do, and we plan our rounds with that in mind. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. We are open about that, and equally open about how we recruit, train and supervise our staff, what our care plans look like and how we handle a complaint.
