About Wave Hill

Wave Hill provides care and support to people in their own homes in Dover and the surrounding parts of Kent. We support older people, adults with a learning disability or autism, people living with a mental health condition, adults with a physical disability, those with a visual or hearing impairment, and younger adults who want support to live more independently. Good home care fits quietly around a person rather than taking over. We begin by asking what is actually hard and what someone still manages perfectly well on their own, because support works best when it builds on what is already there. From there we agree the visits and the tasks, which might cover personal care, prompting and support with medication, meals and drinks, moving safely about the home, laundry, shopping and getting to appointments and out into the town. For younger adults and for people with a learning disability or autism, the emphasis is usually different. There the point is to widen a life rather than manage it, so we spend our time on college, work, friendships, money, cooking and the things that make a week worth having. We adapt how we communicate to suit the person, because being properly understood is where everything else starts. We agree timings and do our best to keep to them, and we aim to send the same familiar faces to each household rather than a different person every week. Plans are reviewed honestly when things change. If you are considering support for yourself or someone close to you, please contact us and we will talk it through.

What the inspectors found

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Wave Hill. Report published 25 July 2019.

Safe

Inspectors found that staff were trained to protect people from harm. Trained staff gave medicines safely. Staff followed safe hand washing and wore gloves to reduce the risk of infection. Background checks were made on new staff.

Effective

Inspectors found that people's needs were assessed and written in a care plan. Care plans were consistently updated. Staff received ongoing training based on people's needs.

Caring

Inspectors saw staff communicating with people in a kind way. People smiled and greeted staff in a relaxed way. The owner and staff had known the people using the service for many years and understood how each person communicated, through body language and pictures.

Responsive

Inspectors found that people received planned and co-ordinated support that suited them. People were supported to have as much choice and control as possible. A system for responding to complaints was in place.

Well-led

Inspectors found that staff were supervised to keep up the standards of care. People, care managers, relatives and staff had the chance to share their views about the service. Systems were in place to investigate incidents and accidents, to reduce the chance of them happening again.
