About L'Arche
We are L'Arche Kent, based in Canterbury and providing support to people in their own homes across the area. We work with adults who have a learning disability and with autistic adults, including both younger adults and older people. What shapes our work is a belief that support should be mutual rather than one directional. The people we support are not problems to be managed, and the relationships that form through this work matter as much as the tasks that get done. That sounds simple but it changes a great deal in practice, from how we recruit to how long we expect people to stay. Support is planned with the person, around the life they want. For some that means help with running a home, managing money and keeping on top of appointments. For others it means backing to hold down a job or a course, to stay connected with family and friends, or to get through the harder stretches without everything unravelling. Where personal care is needed, we provide it without making somebody feel their life has been taken over. Communication is the foundation of everything. We learn how each person tells us what they want, in whatever form that takes, and we make sure every worker understands it. Our most recent CQC overall rating is good.
