About Us
Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is a home care agency supporting people across Canterbury and the wider part of Kent we cover. We help people remain in their own homes, with support shaped around the way they already live.
The people we visit include older people and younger adults, people living with dementia, people with a learning disability or who are autistic, people managing mental health conditions, people with a physical disability, and people with a visual or hearing impairment. Needs that varied cannot be met with a standard package, so we agree an individual plan with each person, put it in plain language, and revisit it whenever things change.
In practice our calls cover personal care, help with medication, meals and drinks, support to move about the house safely, and help to get out to appointments, shops and the places people simply enjoy. For some, the most valuable part is the reliability of someone arriving when they said they would.
We put a lot of effort into continuity. Being cared for is a personal thing, and having to explain yourself to a stranger every few days makes it harder than it needs to be, so we keep the same care workers visiting wherever we can.
Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We use feedback from the people we support and their families to keep improving on that, and we would always rather hear a concern early than find out about it late.

More about the care at Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Day to day support at home for an older person usually covers help with washing and dressing at the start of the day, prompts or hands on help with medication, meals and drinks through the day, and companionship on quieter afternoons. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered with the CQC for older person care, so families can expect regulated visits shaped around what someone can still do for themselves. Typical home care rates across the South East sit at around £29 to £35 an hour, though Kent County Council contributes at its own commissioned rate for eligible people. Ask how call times are agreed and protected, whether the same small group of workers covers each round, and what happens if a visit runs late. It is also worth asking whether night or twilight calls are offered, and how medication errors are recorded and reviewed.
Dementia
Good dementia care at home tends to lean on familiar surroundings, steady routines and workers who know the person well enough to spot when something is off. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered to support people living with dementia, which under CQC rules means visits should be planned around the individual rather than a fixed script. Families should ask how the agency chooses which workers visit, how continuity is protected when someone is on leave, and what training staff have had in dementia specifically. It is worth asking how they respond to distress during personal care, how they handle a person trying to leave the house at the wrong time, and how the plan is revisited as the condition progresses. Ask too how they liaise with the GP, memory service and family when things change.
Learning Disability / Autism
Support for adults with a learning disability or autistic adults works best when it is built around the person's own routines, communication style and sensory needs rather than a generic package. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered for this group, so plans should be agreed with the person and anyone who speaks for them. Ask how goals around independence are tracked, and how Kent County Council reviews and reassessments feed back into day to day visits.
Mental Health
Stability, predictable visit times and being spoken to with dignity matter enormously for adults managing a mental health condition at home. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered to support this group alongside other regulated care types. Ask what experience workers have with mental health specifically, how they respond if someone is unwell or withdrawn on the day, and who they contact if a crisis develops between visits.
Physical Disability
For someone with a physical disability, home care often centres on safe transfers, personal care, and enabling as much independence as the person wants to keep. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered for physical disability support in Canterbury and the surrounding area. Ask how they work with existing equipment such as hoists or profiling beds, whether they coordinate with occupational therapy, and how risk assessments are refreshed when needs change.
Visual / Hearing Impairment
Sight or hearing loss changes small everyday things, from how a worker announces themselves at the door to how medication is checked and confirmed. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered to support people with a visual or hearing impairment. Ask how staff are briefed on communication preferences, whether they use consistent phrases and positioning, and how written information such as the care plan is provided in a format the person can actually use.
Younger Adults
Adults under 65 receiving care at home often want their week to look like anyone else's, with work, study, friendships and hobbies rather than only appointments. Expertise Homecare Ashford and Canterbury is registered to support younger adults across its Kent patch. Ask how visit times flex around a working or social life, and how support is planned around getting out to the places the person actually wants to go.
