We pick up the parts that have become hard, and deliberately leave alone the parts somebody still manages perfectly well, because ability that gets taken away for the sake of speed is very hard to recover. A week with us might include help washing and dressing, medication prompted or given, a cooked meal, help moving safely about the house, laundry, shopping, a lift to an appointment, or simply reliable company at a set time. Some households want one visit a week, others need several calls a day. For people living with dementia we keep the same carers coming at the same times wherever the rota allows, and we work with the routines already in place rather than replacing them with better ones of our own. We have not yet been given an overall rating by the Care Quality Commission. We are happy to talk openly about how we recruit, train and supervise, and about what we do when something goes wrong.
