Benochs Care provides support at home to adults in Greenwich and the surrounding parts of south east London. We visit older people who need help to carry on living in their own houses, adults living with dementia and younger adults who need support to live independently. Our visits cover personal care given without rushing, prompting and support with medication, preparing meals, help with laundry, shopping and keeping the home in order, and getting out to appointments or simply out for some air and company. For people living with dementia, staying at home is often the one thing keeping them settled, and that makes continuity essential rather than merely desirable. The same carers arriving at the same times will do more good than anything else we could offer, so we plan rotas around that rather than around convenience. Alongside the practical tasks sits the part that appears on no schedule, which is noticing. A carer who knows somebody well can tell when they are eating less, sleeping badly, in pain or more confused than usual, and raising that early is often what keeps a person out of hospital. We are guests in the homes we work in, and our staff are expected to behave accordingly and to be straight with us when something has changed.
