About Us

Barnardo's Disability Support and Inclusion works with disabled children, young people and younger adults and their families across the East Riding of Yorkshire, providing support in the family home and in the community. We support people with a learning disability, autistic people, people with physical disabilities and people with sight or hearing loss.

Our purpose is inclusion in the practical sense: making it possible for a young person to do the things their friends and siblings do. That might mean support to join a club, to get out at the weekend, to manage personal care with dignity, or to spend time somewhere without a parent alongside for the first time. It is also about the family. Being a parent carer is relentless, and reliable support that lets a family breathe is worth a great deal.

We take our lead from the young person. We learn how each one communicates, we pay attention to what they enjoy and what they find intolerable, and we adapt what we do rather than expecting them to adapt to us. Support that is done to somebody rarely works for long.

We work closely with families, schools and local teams, and we are honest when something is not going well.
