The people we work with are older people, younger adults and people with physical disabilities. Most people come to us wanting the same thing. To stay in their own house, with their own belongings and their own routine, helped just enough to make that safe and manageable. Our job is to provide that help without taking the household over, because it is somebody's home and somebody's life and we are guests in it. We begin with a visit and an unhurried conversation about what has genuinely become difficult. From that we agree a plan, with family or an advocate involved if the person wants, and we revise it as circumstances change. Visits cover personal care, help with medication, meals and drinks, housework and laundry, shopping, getting to appointments, and company for people whose days have become long and quiet. Where somebody has a physical disability we look carefully at equipment, transfers and how the home is arranged, and we make sure the people visiting are trained for what is needed. Carlisle and the country around it can make travel slow, so we build rotas that are realistic rather than ones that look efficient on paper and leave people waiting.
