What residential care in Newcastle upon Tyne involves and what to look for
What a residential home actually provides
A residential care home offers accommodation together with personal care, so staff help with washing, dressing, meals, medication and the ordinary routines of a day, in a setting where somebody else is always awake overnight. It suits people who can no longer manage safely at home even with visiting carers, but who do not need the clinical support of registered nurses. Homes differ enormously in size and character, from places with fewer than twenty bedrooms to larger premises with several units, and the atmosphere that suits one person will not suit another.
Reading the inspection record
All thirty four homes listed here are registered with the Care Quality Commission. Two have been rated Outstanding and twenty five Good, four hold Requires Improvement, one has been rated Inadequate, and two are not yet rated. Inspectors judge whether a home is safe, effective, caring, responsive and well led, and it is worth seeing how each home scored on all five rather than reading the headline alone. Check the date of the inspection as well, because a home under new management may have changed considerably since the last report was written.
What to notice on a visit
Visit every home you are seriously considering and try to arrive around a mealtime. Watch how staff speak to residents who are not asking for anything, whether people are dressed and occupied, and how quickly call bells are answered. Ask how many permanent staff are on duty by day and overnight and how much agency cover is used. Homes in this listing include settings such as Ferguson Lodge, Craghall Residential Home, Whorlton Grange and Ashleigh, and each feels different once you are through the door.
Getting an assessment and arranging funding in Newcastle upon Tyne
The care needs assessment
Before any placement is agreed, ask for a care needs assessment. It is free, open to anyone who appears to need care and support whatever their means, and it produces the written record of eligible needs that homes will work from. A practitioner from Newcastle upon Tyne City Council will consider personal care, mobility, nutrition, medication, mental wellbeing and the risks of remaining at home. If you have been providing care yourself, ask for a carer's assessment during the same conversation, since that is a separate entitlement.
Fees, contributions and top up payments
A financial assessment of income and capital follows where needs are found eligible. The council may then meet the fees in full, meet part of them with a contribution from the person moving in, or conclude that the placement is privately funded. Weekly fees vary between homes and rise where needs are greater, so ask each home for its current fee, exactly what that covers and what is billed separately, such as hairdressing, chiropody or escorted appointments. Where a family expects to add a top up payment to secure a particular room, agree in writing who will carry future increases before anybody moves in.
