About 12 Addington Close

12 Addington Close is a small residential care home in Devizes, Wiltshire, supporting adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, both younger adults and older residents. We are a household rather than a service, and the difference is visible in fairly mundane ways. People who live here are asked about what goes on, not informed about it. The kitchen gets used. The week has room in it for whatever each person actually wants to do locally. Because the team is small, residents are known properly, which is worth more than any amount of documentation. Our first task with anybody is communication. We learn how each person expresses themselves and prefers to be approached, including residents who use few or no words, and we change what we do to suit them. For autistic residents we take sensory needs and the need for predictability seriously, and we never spring a change on someone when it could have been flagged in advance. Where people want to take on more themselves, we support that patiently: preparing food, managing money, getting about the town, keeping in contact with family and friends. Where someone is content with a routine that has served them for years, we protect it rather than reforming it. Our last overall rating from the Care Quality Commission was good. We work closely with families, advocates and community teams, and we are glad to answer questions or arrange a visit.
