About 17 Berryfield Road

17 Berryfield Road is a small residential care home in Bradford on Avon, Wiltshire. We support adults with learning disabilities and autistic people, among them both younger adults and people who are growing older. Our starting position is that this is the residents' home and their lives, and that our job is to make those lives wider rather than more managed. So residents are consulted rather than informed, they are involved in the shopping, the cooking and the decisions, and the shape of the week comes from them. A small staff team makes that realistic, because people are genuinely known here. We work out first how each person communicates and wishes to be approached, including residents who use little or no speech, and we fit ourselves around that. For autistic residents we pay careful attention to sensory needs and to keeping things predictable, and we give plenty of warning when something has to change. Supporting independence is slow, specific work: a meal prepared, money handled in a shop, a local journey made alone, a visit arranged by the person themselves. We would rather spend the extra half hour than do it for somebody. For residents who are happiest with an established routine, we guard that routine instead of trying to improve on it. The Care Quality Commission last rated us good overall. Families, advocates and professionals are welcome to visit us or to call with questions.
