About Amelia House

Amelia House is a residential care home at Normanton near Wakefield, and we support adults with learning disabilities, autistic people, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite stays are available as well. We are a household rather than a facility. People here have their own rooms and their own belongings, and a real say over how the day goes. The staff team is kept deliberately consistent, because support from people who know you well is a wholly different thing from support from whoever happens to be on shift. Changes are explained in advance, the shape of the week holds, and we take sensory comfort seriously. Support covers personal care, medication, meals, money and the practical business of running a home, and wherever we can we do things alongside people rather than for them. A task done slowly by the person themselves is a better outcome than the same task done quickly by us. For those with physical disabilities the emphasis is on equipment that fits properly and transfers handled safely and without embarrassment. For people living with sight or hearing loss, unhurried communication and a thoughtfully arranged environment matter most. We are equally interested in what happens beyond the house: college, work, hobbies, friendships and family visits. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Families, social workers and anyone considering Amelia House for somebody are welcome to visit and ask us anything.
