About The Barn and Coach
The Barn and Coach is a care home in Grays in Thurrock. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, and we offer respite stays for those needing care for a short period. We want this to feel like a house people live in rather than somewhere they have been placed. Visitors come at the times that suit them. There is usually something going on that nobody has to join. Staff sit down and talk properly rather than passing through on the way to the next job. People here decide when they get up, what they wear, what they eat and whether they want company or their own space with the door shut. Dementia care rests on patience and a recognisable day. We avoid springing things on people, we keep routines familiar, and when somebody is distressed we go looking for the cause rather than trying to smooth it over. Relatives often know precisely what helps, and we would much rather be told at the beginning than work it out over months. The practical side gets proper attention too: food people actually want to eat, medication handled carefully, quick response when somebody is unwell, and plain conversations with families when things change. At our most recent inspection the Care Quality Commission rated us good overall, and we keep asking residents and relatives where we still fall short.
