About SeeAbility - Views
Surrey Views is a residential care home in Leatherhead in Surrey, part of SeeAbility. We support adults with learning disabilities, autistic adults, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults, and we offer respite stays for people who usually live elsewhere. A good deal of what we do concerns people who live with both a learning disability and sight loss, and that combination is often badly understood. It means small habits carry an enormous amount of weight. Saying who you are as you come into a room rather than assuming you are recognised. Leaving furniture exactly where it lives. Describing what is about to happen before it happens. Checking that glasses are clean and hearing aids actually working. We build those into the ordinary day rather than treating them as extra care. Beyond that, this is somebody's home and they run it. Rooms are arranged by the people in them. The shopping is decided by the people who will eat it. Weekend plans belong to whoever is going. We ask instead of assuming and we accept being turned down. Understanding how each person communicates is central here, particularly where speech is not the main route. We learn each person's way, write it down so that everybody responds identically, and keep checking we have understood. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking the people living here what should change.

What the inspectors found
A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of SeeAbility - Surrey Views. Report published 7 December 2018.
- 6 November 2018
- 8 places, 7 people were using the service at the time
Safe
Inspectors found that policies, procedures and staff training were in place to protect people from avoidable harm and abuse. Risks to people were identified and managed safely, and medicines were handled safely and securely. Recruitment processes were followed, staffing levels were enough to keep people safe, and accidents and incidents were reviewed.
Effective
Inspectors found that staff had received training, support and supervision. People's rights under the Mental Capacity Act 2005 were respected, and staff understood the importance of getting people's consent. People were supported to eat and drink enough and to see healthcare professionals.
Caring
Inspectors found that staff treated people with kindness, respect and dignity. Staff supported people to make choices about their lives. Staff also provided consistency and care for people when they needed to stay in hospital.
Responsive
Inspectors found that care was tailored to people's lifestyle choices. Care plans were person centred, and support plans were reviewed with people and their families. Activity programmes were designed around people's individual preferences, and processes were in place for making complaints.
Well-led
At the time of the inspection there was no registered manager in post, but one was being trained and registered. Inspectors found that the provider had governance processes and quality assurance systems in place. They also found that the culture was open and that management gave clear leadership and direction to staff.
