About Us
Here at The Grange Residential Home in Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk, we provide a warm and homely environment for the people who live with us. Our team supports older adults, younger adults, and individuals with learning disabilities or autism, and we also offer respite care for those who need a short break or a period of additional support.
We know that choosing a care home is one of the most significant decisions a person or family will ever make, and we do not take that lightly. Our aim is straightforward: to make sure each person who lives here feels safe, respected, and genuinely at home. We take time to get to know people properly, understanding their routines, preferences, and what matters most to them day to day.
We want to be honest with you. Our most recent CQC inspection resulted in a "requires improvement" rating, and we have taken that seriously. We have been working hard to address the areas identified and to strengthen the way we work across the home. We believe in being open about where we are and transparent about the steps we are taking to improve. The people in our care deserve nothing less, and neither do their families.
Respite care is something we approach with particular care, recognising that for many people it is their first experience of residential support. We try to make that transition as gentle and reassuring as possible.
Our team in Bury St Edmunds is made up of people who show up each day genuinely committed to doing right by the individuals in our care. We continue to learn, to listen, and to improve. If you would like to find out more about life at The Grange or to arrange a visit, we would be very happy to hear from you.

More about the care at The Grange Residential Home
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Choice is the thing to listen for on a visit: who decides when somebody gets up, bathes, or eats, and whether anybody asks. The underlying work is help with washing and dressing, medication given accurately, meals, and company through the afternoon. The Grange Residential Home in Bury St Edmunds is registered for older person care, with weekly fees in the East commonly between £1000 and £1350 while Suffolk pays about £750 to £900 for placements it funds. A top up frequently covers the gap, so ask early who would be expected to pay it. Ask how many staff are awake overnight and how quickly a call bell is answered.
Learning Disability / Autism
A home taking both older people and adults with learning disabilities has two rather different jobs to do well, and it is fair to ask how it manages both. Support should build on what somebody can already do, keep routines predictable, and respect sensory needs. The Grange Residential Home is registered for learning disability and autism support, so ask who commissions the placement and how often it is reviewed.
Younger Adults
Ask what a younger resident's Tuesday actually looks like, since that tells you more than any list of facilities. The Grange Residential Home is registered for younger adults, so ask how many live there, what they do with their time, and how much choice they have. Internet access and help getting out locally are reasonable questions.
Respite Care
Book a short stay early, and read the latest inspection report before you do. Most homes want a minimum of one or two weeks, and holiday periods fill months ahead, so flexibility on dates helps. Send labelled clothing and medication in its original packaging, and use a stay at The Grange Residential Home to judge whether a longer arrangement would suit.
Residential Care
Nothing clinical happens in a residential home beyond what visiting GPs and district nurses bring with them; the service itself is meals, laundry, help with personal care and some activity. The Care Quality Commission rated The Grange Residential Home requires improvement at its inspection in March 2019, the second lowest of the four ratings. That report is also several years old, which makes two questions worth asking: what the findings were, and what has been done since. It is reasonable to ask who manages the home now, whether the council is still placing people, and when a further inspection is expected. Ask as well what the weekly fee covers and which extras are charged on top.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
