About Us

Fornham House is a residential home near Bury St Edmunds. We are home to older people, including many living with dementia, and we support younger adults too. Respite stays are part of what we do.

We keep institutional habits out: no waking people for handover, no queueing for meals, no assuming everybody wants the television on.

Dementia care here depends on knowing the person. We ask relatives early for the working life, the places and the music, because that information is much harder to gather later and it is what still connects when a good deal else has gone.

Having younger residents as well as older ones means we ask people individually what a good day looks like rather than running a single programme, and we accept the answer when it is to be left alone.

We keep an eye on weight, appetite and mood, because those are usually the first signs that something has changed for somebody.

The Care Quality Commission rates us good overall. Our own test is sharper: whether somebody who has lived here a year still feels at home, and we ask them directly.
