About Us

Orient Street is an adult respite unit in Southwark, and respite is not a sideline for us, it is the whole purpose of the place. People come to us for a planned break, and their families get a rest that they can take without spending the week worrying.

Because our stays are short we have to be good at beginnings. We find out in advance how a person communicates, what their routine is, what they eat, what unsettles them and what settles them again. A fortnight is no time at all to learn somebody slowly, so we arrive at it prepared and we ask the people who know them best.

We support a wide range of adults. Older people, including those living with dementia, autistic adults and people with learning disabilities, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities, people living with sight or hearing loss, and younger adults. Respite for each of those looks different, and the one thing they share is that a break should feel like a break rather than a disruption.

We want people to come back willingly, which is the honest test of a respite unit. If somebody returns and is pleased to be here, we have done the job.

Our overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. We keep asking guests and families what would make the next stay better.
