About St Thomas Complex
St Thomas Complex is a care home in South Shields in South Tyneside. We provide residential care for older people and younger adults, including people living with dementia, people managing mental health conditions, people with physical disabilities and people living with sight or hearing loss. Respite stays are available as well. Because the people living here have very different needs, we plan care person by person. What helps somebody with dementia feel settled is not what helps somebody living with a long standing mental health condition, and one routine stretched over everybody suits nobody in particular. That means we spend our time on detail: how a person likes to be addressed, what they can still do and would rather do themselves, what tends to make a bad day, and what heads it off early. Where sight or hearing loss is in the picture, habits matter more than equipment. Saying who you are when you come into the room. Leaving furniture exactly where it belongs. Making sure hearing aids and glasses are clean and actually working. People here decide when they get up, what they eat and how they spend the day. Visitors are welcome at whatever hour suits them, and we would far rather a concern reached us early and bluntly than be saved up for months. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection, and we keep asking residents and relatives where we still fall short.
