About Hummingbird House
Hummingbird House is a residential care home in Oldbury, in the Sandwell area, supporting adults with a learning disability and adults who are autistic. We work with younger adults and we can offer respite stays. Because we are a small house, the people who live here are known properly. Support is worked out person by person and the week is shaped around what each individual wants from it, whether that is a course, a job, a regular trip out, time with family or simply a settled routine that nobody disrupts. Our team is trained to understand how each person communicates, including people who do not use speech, and to read the signs that somebody is uncomfortable, bored or in pain. We treat distress as information. There is nearly always a reason behind it, and looking for the reason is more useful than trying to manage the behaviour. People choose their own food, have their own space respected and are supported to take on as much for themselves as they want to. Where somebody wants to build a new skill, we expect it to take as long as it takes. Respite stays are arranged carefully, with visits beforehand so that arrival day is not a shock. If you would like to look round or talk about a placement, please contact us.
