About Shetland House

Shetland House is a residential care home in Whitby, supporting people from across North Yorkshire and the coast. We care for older people and for younger adults, including residents living with dementia, people with physical disabilities and those with visual or hearing impairments. We offer respite stays as well as permanent places. Supporting a mixed household takes thought, and we believe it makes for a better home. What every resident gets is the same foundation: a room that is genuinely theirs, food worth sitting down for, help given without fuss and staff who take the trouble to learn who they are. For residents with sensory impairments we change how we communicate rather than expecting them to adjust to us, and we pay attention to lighting, noise and layout, which make a bigger difference than people expect. For those living with dementia, life history and routine guide everything we do. For younger residents, we make sure that needing care does not mean giving up plans, friendships or a say in ordinary decisions. Whitby itself is part of daily life here. Sea air, the harbour and the comings and goings of a working town give people something to look forward to, and we get residents out whenever we can. The Care Quality Commission rated us good at our most recent inspection. You are welcome to visit on an ordinary day and see for yourself.
