About Us

Red House Residential Home is in Thetford, providing residential care to older people, with respite stays available as well. We are a home for people who need help with everyday living rather than nursing care.

The emphasis here is on life rather than on care, even though care is what we provide. Residents keep their own routines, their own belongings and their own preferences, and are supported to carry on doing whatever they can for themselves. Doing something for somebody is almost always quicker than helping them do it, and it is almost always the wrong choice.

Many of the people living here have dementia. Our approach relies on familiarity: the same staff, a routine that holds its shape, and enough time for somebody to respond in their own way. Where a resident becomes distressed we look for the reason, which is usually pain, confusion, boredom or fear, rather than simply managing the behaviour in front of us.

Respite guests are welcomed into the household properly rather than parked at the edge of it.

Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is Good.

If you are looking at homes in the Thetford area, please come and see us. Walk round, talk to the residents, and judge the place on what you find rather than on what we have written here.
