About Us

Southcote Lodge Care Home is a residential care home in Lincoln, supporting older people from across Lincolnshire, including many people living with dementia.

Our ambition here is unfashionably plain: we want the ordinary days to be good ones. Food cooked in our own kitchen that people look forward to. Personal care given calmly and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like they belong to the person in them. Somebody awake at night. Enough going on in the house that there is a reason to come downstairs, and no pressure at all on anybody who would rather not.

People keep their own habits wherever we can arrange it. A home that insists everybody rises at the same hour and bathes to a schedule has stopped being a home and become a timetable with beds in it.

Dementia care is most of what we do and we have clear views about it. Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all. Familiar staff, a calm and unhurried house, and knowing enough of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation help enormously. Relatives are our best source of that history, and we ask for it early rather than as a form filling exercise.

The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Come and see us at a busy time of day and ask the people who live here what they think.

More about the care at Southcote Lodge Care Home

What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.

Older Person Care

Making the ordinary days good ones is how this home states its ambition, which it admits is unfashionably plain. In practice that means food cooked in the home's own kitchen, personal care given calmly and in private, medication managed properly, and warm rooms that look as though they belong to the person in them. Southcote Lodge Care Home says there is enough going on that a resident has a reason to come downstairs, and no pressure on anyone who would rather not. It also states that somebody is awake at night, which families otherwise have to ask about. Ask how many staff that means for sixty five residents. Ask how an established routine is recorded when somebody first moves in.

Dementia

Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody at all, this home says, and that is the right starting point. It argues instead for familiar staff, a calm and unhurried house, and knowing enough of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation. Relatives are described as the best source of that history, asked for early rather than as a form filling exercise. Dementia care is most of what happens at this Lincoln home, though the registration is residential rather than nursing. Ask what happens when a resident becomes distressed in the evening. Ask at what point needs would exceed what the home can offer.

Residential Care

A home that insists everybody rises at the same hour has stopped being a home and become a timetable with beds in it, this one says. Residential care means everyday living support without nurses on the premises: cooked meals, personal care, medication and company, with GPs and community nurses visiting when needed. That is the practical difference from a nursing home, where qualified nurses are on site at all hours. Fees for residential care in the East Midlands typically run from £850 to £1100 a week, while Lincolnshire usually pays between £680 and £820. Ask what would happen if a resident came to need nursing care, and whether a move would then be unavoidable.
