About Thurnby Fields
Thurnby Fields is a residential care home near Leicester, supporting older people and younger adults from the city and surrounding Leicestershire, including many people living with dementia. Most people arrive here after a difficult stretch rather than at a moment of their own choosing, so we treat the first few weeks as the part that matters most. We learn how somebody likes their day arranged before we start arranging anything, and we expect that a person may be grieving for their own house while settling into a room here. Once settled, what we offer is deliberately unremarkable. Food cooked in our kitchen that people look forward to. Personal care given without fuss and in private. Medication managed properly. Warm rooms that look like somebody's own. Staff awake at night. A household with enough rhythm to give the day a shape, and nobody obliged to take part in anything at all. Dementia care is a large part of our work and we have settled views about it. Correcting somebody about the year, or about where a long dead spouse has got to, helps nobody. Familiar faces, an unhurried house and enough knowledge of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation help a great deal. Relatives hold most of that knowledge and we ask for it early. The Care Quality Commission has not yet given us an overall rating. Visit us at a busy time of day and ask the residents what they think.

More about the care at Thurnby Fields
Dementia Care at Thurnby Fields
Familiar faces, an unhurried house and enough knowledge of a person's life to find the thread of a conversation are what this home says help with dementia. It is equally clear that correcting somebody about the year helps nobody at all, which is the right view. In a home of eighty three the question is whether those familiar faces survive the rota, so ask how staff are allocated. The registration is residential rather than nursing, which sets a limit on what can be managed as health declines. Ask how a difficult afternoon is handled. Ask at what stage the home would say somebody needs more than it can give.
Residential Care at Thurnby Fields
Eighty three places make this one of the larger residential homes near Leicester, and the registration is residential rather than nursing. That means everyday living support without nurses on the premises: cooked meals, personal care, medication, company and a household with enough rhythm to give the day a shape. Clinical needs are met by GPs and community nurses visiting instead. Fees for residential care in the East Midlands typically run from £850 to £1100 a week, while Leicestershire usually pays between £680 and £820. Ask what would happen if a resident came to need nursing care, and whether that would mean moving elsewhere.
Older Person Care at Thurnby Fields
Food cooked in the home's own kitchen that people look forward to is the first item on what this place calls its deliberately unremarkable list. The rest is personal care given without fuss and in private, medication managed properly, warm rooms that look like somebody's own, and staff awake at night. Thurnby Fields says the first few weeks matter most, and that it learns how a person likes their day arranged before arranging anything. Ask how many staff are awake overnight for eighty three residents. Ask how that routine is recorded once learned. Ask who telephones a relative when something changes before morning.
Younger Adults at Thurnby Fields
Nobody is obliged to take part in anything at all, this home says, which is a reasonable promise to an adult under sixty five. In a house of eighty three mostly older residents, though, the harder question is what the week actually holds. Ask what a younger resident would do with their days near Leicester, and whether anyone close to their age lives here.
