About Us
Here at Lady Elsie Finney House, we provide residential care for older people in the heart of Preston, Lancashire. We are a care home that genuinely gets to know the people who live with us, taking the time to understand who they are, what matters to them, and how they like to live their lives.
We support a range of needs here, including residential care, dementia care, mental health needs, and care for younger adults. This means our team has broad experience and a real understanding of how varied and individual care needs can be. We do not take a one size fits all approach. Every person who comes through our doors brings their own story, their own preferences, and their own way of doing things, and we work hard to make sure that is respected every single day.
Our most recent Care Quality Commission inspection rated us as Good, which we are proud of, though we are always looking at how we can do better for the people in our care. That rating reflects the work our staff put in consistently, not just when someone is watching.
Life at Lady Elsie Finney House is about more than meeting care needs. We want people to feel at home, to enjoy their days, and to feel part of a community. Whether that means sitting down for a proper cup of tea and a chat, joining in with activities, or simply having some quiet time to themselves, we try to make space for all of it.
If you are considering care for yourself or someone you love, we would always encourage you to come and visit us. No amount of reading about a place tells you as much as walking through the door and getting a feel for it yourself. We would be very happy to show you around.

More about the care at Lady Elsie Finney House Home for Older People
What each type of care involves, and the questions worth asking when you call or visit.
Older Person Care
Day to day support for older people generally means help with washing and dressing at a pace that suits the resident, prompts or hands on assistance with medication, meals prepared and served in company, and someone around for a chat or a hand when it is needed. Lady Elsie Finney House is registered with the CQC to provide older person care in Preston, so families weighing it up should ask how morning and evening routines are organised, whether residents can get up and go to bed when they choose, and how staffing is arranged overnight. It is also worth asking how medication rounds are timed, how continence needs are supported discreetly, and how the home keeps track of small changes in wellbeing. Weekly fees across the North West sit roughly between £800 and £1050, with Lancashire County Council typically funding around £650 to £800.
Dementia
Well delivered dementia care tends to rest on familiar daily rhythms, staff who understand how the condition affects mood and communication, and a layout that feels calm, safe and easy to navigate without feeling clinical. Lady Elsie Finney House is registered to provide dementia care, so it is worth visiting to see how the environment feels and to ask specific questions before making a decision. Useful areas to explore include how the team responds when a resident becomes distressed or agitated, what happens if someone walks with purpose and tries to leave, and how care is adjusted as memory, mobility and communication change over time. Ask too about family involvement in care planning. Regional weekly fees generally fall between £800 and £1050, while Lancashire County Council typically funds around £650 to £800.
Mental Health
For adults living with longer term mental health conditions, consistent routines, respectful staff and a settled environment often matter as much as any specific intervention. Lady Elsie Finney House is registered with the CQC for mental health support, and families should ask about staff experience with particular conditions, how the home works with community mental health teams, and what happens during a crisis or relapse.
Younger Adults
Adults under 65 in a residential setting benefit from activities, conversation and daily rhythms that reflect their age rather than defaulting to what suits much older residents. Lady Elsie Finney House is registered to support younger adults, so it is worth asking how lifestyle, interests and peer contact are considered, and how independence, work, study or outside relationships are supported alongside care needs.
Respite Care
Planned short breaks usually work best when booked well ahead, as rooms can be limited and homes often ask for a minimum stay of one or two weeks. Pack clothing, toiletries, medication in its original packaging, and a few familiar items. Lady Elsie Finney House is registered for respite, and a short stay can double as a trial before any decision about permanent care.
Residential Care
Everyday living in a residential setting covers the practical things that become harder to manage alone, such as cooked meals, laundry, help with bathing and dressing, prompts with medication, and company through the day. It differs from nursing care because there is no registered nurse on site around the clock, so it suits people whose health needs can be met by trained care staff rather than clinical input. Lady Elsie Finney House in Preston is registered for residential care and was rated Good by the CQC following its August 2018 inspection. Families looking here should ask how mealtimes work, what activities happen during a normal week, and how the home would respond if a resident's health needs grew beyond residential level. Typical North West fees range from about £800 to £1050 a week, with Lancashire's council rate closer to £650 to £800.
