About Maltreath Residential Care Home

Maltreath is a residential care home in Margate, on the Kent coast. We support older adults and younger adults, including people living with mental health needs, and we offer respite stays alongside permanent places. A residential home is somebody's address, not a ward, and we try to run it that way. People get up when they wake, eat what they like, keep their own things around them and shut their door when they want to. Our staff are there for the parts of the day that have become difficult, whether that is washing and dressing, keeping track of medication, getting to appointments, or managing money and post. Supporting people with mental health needs asks for a particular kind of steadiness. Good days and hard days are both normal here, and we do not treat a difficult week as a failure or as a reason to change everything at once. We work with the people already involved in somebody's care and we keep to what has been agreed, because predictability is often what helps most. Respite is available for anybody who needs a short stay, whether to give a family carer a break, to bridge a gap after time in hospital, or to try living here before deciding anything permanent. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. You are very welcome to come and see the home, meet people, and ask us whatever you want to ask.

A plain English summary of the Care Quality Commission inspection behind the current rating of Maltreath Residential Care Home. Report published 23 March 2023.

  • 2 March 2023
  • 12 places, 7 people were using the service at the time

Safe

People told inspectors they felt safe. Staff had training in safeguarding, there were enough staff on duty, and people received their medicines as prescribed. Detailed guidance was not always available to staff on how to reduce risks to people.

Effective

Staff had the training they needed for their roles, including giving medicines. Staff had positive links with social and healthcare professionals. Staff supported people in the least restrictive way possible.

Caring

Staff offered people choices in their lives and respected the decisions they made. People told inspectors they were supported to stay as independent as possible.

Well-led

The registered manager had not always told CQC about notifiable events in a timely way. They had noticed this by the time of the inspection and told CQC afterwards. People's records did not always contain the guidance needed to give care in the way that suited them best, and CQC made a recommendation to improve records. A governance framework was in place, audits had been done, and action had been taken when shortfalls were found.
