About Southfields

Southfields is a residential care home in Ashford. We support older people and younger adults, including adults with a learning disability, autistic adults, and people with physical disabilities or sight and hearing loss. Because the people who live here are at very different stages of life and want very different things, we plan individually rather than running the house to a single routine. Some people are out a good deal, at activities, at work or seeing family. Others prefer things quiet and predictable. Neither is treated as a problem. Support is agreed with each person using whatever way of communicating already works for them, and we take the trouble to learn it properly. Help with washing, dressing, mobility and medication is given discreetly and at the time somebody prefers. We pay close attention to the practical things that often decide whether a house works for a person: moving about safely, equipment that suits, and information available in a form somebody can actually use. Health appointments are followed up properly rather than left to drift. Families and friends are welcome whenever they want to come, and short respite stays are available, which can also be a good way of seeing whether we suit before anyone commits. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Please get in touch if you would like to look round.

Safe

Inspectors found that the provider had invested in the property and finished the renovation work. A breach in regulation found at the last inspection was now met. The management team reviewed medicines practice, including availability and storage. The provider had carried out checks to make sure staff were suitable to work with people, and staff levels reflected people's needs.

Effective

Inspectors found that staff had the skills and training needed to support people. Staff were supported by the registered manager. Records were up to date and reviewed, and guidance was in place so staff could support people in a consistent way.

Caring

Inspectors found that people were happy and that staff engaged with people in a kind way. The service supported people to keep up relationships with family and friends. People were encouraged to increase their independence.

Responsive

Inspectors found that care plans were detailed and set out how people wanted to be supported. The plans reflected people's goals and ambitions. People were busy during the visit, taking part in activities and outings. People and relatives felt able to raise concerns if they had any.

Inspectors found that systems to assess, monitor and improve the service were robust and effective. At the last inspection, formal audits had not started. The registered manager and staff worked with a clear vision for the service, and people were consulted on key issues that might affect them.

What people told the inspectors

Inspectors said feedback from a relative was positive, and that communication from staff was good. People and relatives commented on the attitudes of staff and said they felt able to raise concerns.
