About Us
The Mead is a residential care home in Borehamwood, Hertfordshire. We provide a permanent home to older people and to some younger adults, and we also offer respite stays for those who need care for a short spell or whose family carer needs a break. Our residents need different things from us. Many need help with personal care, moving about safely, medication and meals. A good number are living with dementia, and we let that shape the whole house rather than treating it as a separate department. The day follows a recognisable pattern, familiar staff are around, people keep their own habits and belongings, and somebody who is upset gets company and time rather than correction. We also support people with physical disabilities, where equipment, seating and access decide how much independence somebody actually has. Food is cooked on the premises and people are asked what they would like rather than told what there is. There is somewhere sociable to sit and somewhere quiet, a garden that gets used when the weather allows, and families are welcome whenever they can come. Our most recent overall rating from the Care Quality Commission is good. Deciding on a care home is not something to do from a brochure, so please come and visit, at a mealtime if you can, and talk to whoever is on duty.

Can Mum or Dad stay here if their dementia gets worse?

Ask the home. End of life care is not listed on the register. Ask the manager whether residents can remain in the home with hospice or district nurse support.

Ask the home. The home has not told us its pet policy yet. Ask directly; some homes allow small pets in residents' rooms or welcome visiting dogs.
Can a couple stay together?
Ask the home. We do not know whether the home has rooms for couples. Ask about shared or adjoining rooms if this matters.
Will the council help pay, or is it self funded only?
Ask the home. The home has not told us which funding it accepts. Most homes take both council funded and self funded residents; ask about council rates and any top up. Use our funding calculator to check what you might pay.

Yes. The Mead supports younger adults as well as older people. Source: CQC register
Can I visit before deciding, and are there visiting hours?
